With over 7,000 idyllic islands the Philippines has a reputation for being a magical paradise, but there is more to this archipelago than beaches and palm trees. Its rich history has shaped a diverse culture and its unique geology has allowed life to sprout in so many places that even Charles Darwin would be blown away.


In this TV series, BBC wildlife presenter and explorer Mike Dilger will discover a series of remarkable cultural and natural history stories. To help him, Rico Hizon, the BBC’s best known Filipino broadcaster, will give the inside story, he’ll put things in context and explain why these elements are important for the future of the nation. Together they will travel across the archipelago to dig beneath the tourist veneer and see what is happening now, and importantly what the forthcoming years hold for the people and animals of the Philippines.

They will experience Filipino farming, work alongside the locals, help conservationists and explore deep caverns. In doing so, they will unearth the islands’ true treasures:


Episode 1

Join nature fanatic Mike Dilger and BBC World News broadcaster Rico Hizon as they go in search of rich culture and rare wildlife in one of the greatest biodiversity hotspots in the world – the Philippines. On the beautiful island of Palawan, Mike discovers creatures living deep underground at the Puerto Princesa subterranean river; he meets a member of the ancient Batak tribe who shows him a precious tree resin; witnesses a magical firefly display in the mangroves, and helps a local conservation team who are trying to save the critically endangered Philippine cockatoo. Exploring Filipino culture, Rico takes Mike to meet some inspiring home-grown businesses and explains the Philippines’s rich history through its intriguing language.

Episode 2

In this second episode, wildlife enthusiast Mike Dilger uncovers rich biodiversity and inspiring conservation heroes. On the tropical island of Coron, he is surrounded by immense karst limestone cliffs and dives on part of the world-famous coral triangle. Travelling north to the island of Luzon, Mike joins Filipino BBC World News presenter Rico Hizon and together they visit the eerie hanging coffins of Sagada, help till the rice terraces of Banaue and enjoy one of the nation’s best-loved dishes; adobo. In a quest to see exotic species, Mike teams up with a group of devoted conservationists to help save the rarest crocodile in the world.

This adventure will take our hosts across the beautiful Philippines, as they reveal the islands’ true treasures from the past, present and the future.
